MURANO 3D – WHEN GLASS TRADITION MEETS 3D PRINTING

On October 29, 2025, the final event of the project “Murano 3D: Innovation and Sustainability for Artistic Glass” (DGR. 231 of 13/03/2024) was held at the Cotonificio – Auditorium Hall in Venice. The initiative was promoted by Coop.Services, lead partner of the Regional Innovative Network Euteknos – Artistic Manufacturing of Veneto, in collaboration with the Iuav University of Venice and the University of Padua.

The event served as a platform for dialogue between research, education, and businesses, focusing on the intersection between Murano’s glassmaking tradition and the new opportunities offered by additive manufacturing and digital technologies.

THE MURANO 3D PROJECT

Murano 3D was born from the need to innovate the production processes of Murano’s glassmaking tradition, where glass is still cast in molds made of wood, iron, or bronze.
The main goal of the project was to experiment with additive manufacturing (3D printing) for the production of molds used to create glass artifacts, making production more flexible, sustainable, and accessible even for small batches.

The initiative, which followed the regional project D3VeRo, enabled the integration of artisanal skills with experimental innovative technologies and advanced digital tools, providing new knowledge and operational capabilities to workers and companies in the supply chain.
The aim is to support the sector’s competitiveness and green transition by enhancing the culture and creativity that have made Murano glass unique for centuries.

The morning: IUAV students’ ideas
The morning session of the event was dedicated to the presentation of projects by students from the Iuav University of Venice, enrolled in the Architecture, Interior Design, and Product Design programs.
The students presented concepts and prototypes of glass objects and products designed to be manufactured using 3D printing technologies.
IUAV professors and researchers analyzed and evaluated the projects, paying special attention to the economic and design sustainability of the proposals, demonstrating how new technologies can serve as a bridge between creativity, innovation, and artisanal production.

The Afternoon: Project Outcomes and Future Perspectives
In the afternoon, representatives from Euteknos and the academic world presented the training and technological results achieved by the Murano 3D project, along with its future development prospects.

• Filippo Gobbin: Technologist – Industrial Engineering, University of Padua

During the round table titled “Looking Ahead: The Art of Murano Glass Between Tradition and Innovation”, speakers discussed the impact of additive manufacturing on the future of glass production, analyzing how 3D technology can help reduce costs, save energy, and make processes more sustainable—without compromising the aesthetic and artisanal quality that defines Murano glass.

The Murano 3D initiative marks an important step in the innovation journey of artistic manufacturing in Veneto, specifically in the artistic glass sector. It opens new perspectives for a field that blends tradition, beauty, and technological research.

The event concluded with a networking cocktail, fostering the exchange of ideas among businesses, researchers, and industry professionals, and reaffirming Euteknos’ role as a key network for promoting innovative and collaborative projects.
